| April 20, 2009: Bank of Canada urged to chop benchmark interest rate by 50%, down to 25 basis points from the current 50 basis points... This may actually happen... |
According to StatsCan, assuming that you don't want to eat a balanced diet, and choose to live in a cardboard box on a downtown Toronto sidewalk - but drive a gas guzzler - inflation is down to below the projected 1.4%...
So here are some numbers to consider:
Food
-potato prices are up 54.9% from a year ago,
-fresh vegetables are up 26.5% from a year ago
-fresh fruits are up 19.3% from a year ago
-non-alcoholic beverages are up 10.2% from a year ago
-cereal products are up 11% from a year ago
-meats are up 7.6% from a year ago
-housing is up 2.1% since last month and continues to rise
but...
-gasoline prices are down from a year ago.
-alcoholic beverages are essentially at the same price level as a year ago
The moral of the story is that drunk drivers of gas guzzler clunkers who don't eat fresh vegetables are likely experiencing a relief from inflation; however, the rest of us are not so fortunate.
