| December 3, 2009: Avast Anti Virus freaks out and goes on a false alarm spree... |
Earlier yesterday, we noticed that Avast appears to have had a nervous melt down. It started to suggest numerous clean binaries (program code), particularly code created with Delphi, as malware.
As also noted at other technical forums, "At first it looked like an isolated incident, but it now appears to be anything but. Avast's user forums have been getting hammered for several hours by users experiencing the same thing - a rash of false positives following a recent definition update."
This occurrence is somewhat similar to a SNAFU several months ago with AVG, which blackballed iTunes after an update. A second update quickly fixed the problem, and that will likely be the case with Avast as well (see note below)
NOTE: We are advised that a new update has now become available for Avast, so manually update Avast if you're still having problems.
